Casinos voted down in legislative committee

FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) -- A proposal to legalize casinos in Kentucky has been voted down by a sharply divided House committee.

Two separate proposals were up for consideration on Tuesday, but the Committee on Elections, Constitutional Amendments and Intergovernmental Affairs couldn't agree on either.

Beshear met with House Speaker Jody Richards and other Democratic leaders in his office Monday night in an effort to nudge his gambling proposal along.

Beshear wants Kentucky lawmakers to approve a constitutional amendment that would allow casino gambling in the state.
