I have eased up a bit on poor Alison Lundergan Grimes and her keystone cops campaign. Yes, our predictions and analysis way back when with regard to; "if the Grimes campaign does this and this it will be a disaster" is indeed coming true. The best shot at unseating the grinch that stole the U.S. Senate in the last 30 years is going up in flames. Blame big daddy Lundergan if you want, blame the ever present Kentucky campaign leeches if you want, hell you can blame Obama, if you want, but the blame clearly rests on the shoulders of Alison Lundergan Grimes for setting fire to a very promising campaign.
Somebody deep within the Grimes campaign made the decision to attempt to out Republican the king of Republicans. It didn't work. The missteps over the last 4 weeks have been intensely painful to watch, mentally agonizing to analyze. The level of arrogance within the Grimes campaign over the last 4 weeks is truly incomprehensible. A level of arrogance that I have never witnessed, well, the failed 2003 Chandler gubernatorial campaign does come to mind as a close second. Grimes has acted at times as if she is entitled, as if she is ordained. Well, she's not and if the numbers hold she will soon be responsible for a new Kentucky political term for blowing a campaign all to hell. If the numbers hold Kentucky politicos will soon say "Don't pull a Grimes now ya hear!" It will be a future warning for all who wade into the treacherous waters of Kentucky campaign politics.
Now that the DSCC has abandoned her, just like we predicted would be the case months ago, maybe Grimes can now put her big girl pants on a make the final two weeks of this campaign memorable. Maybe she can salvage her political career. Yes, we said salvage her career, because she is in danger of becoming a political pariah in Kentucky. The people of the Commonwealth, yes, even the common folk, will remember this for a long, long time to come, if the numbers hold.
She got extremely lucky that the voting public south of Richmond didn't get saturated with the hidden video showing her supporter's true colors toward coal. The Kentucky liberal media saved her tail by not running with it. But I don't think she will be so lucky with regard to her ridiculous refusal to answer the question if she voted for Obama in 2008 and 2012. That was truly stupid, a true amateur hour mistake. And we seen the hypocritical nature of the liberal mass media in action. They ignored the hidden coal video but blasted her all to hell for the Obama debacle. And she has pissed off a huge portion of golden triangle voters to boot. She also produced a gut wrenching campaign ad on immigration, the anti immigrant rhetoric in that ad is truly painful to hear. This could be the death nail because when you piss off the people who have supported you from the beginning, you're screwed.
I have continuously polled the common folk in my region with this question throughout the campaign: "What's your biggest beef with McConnell, if you vote against him, what would be the reason?" And 99% of the time I get the same damn answer; "He has been there long enough!" Very rarely do I hear specific issues, or McConnell's elemental policy positions. It's a primal issue for the common folk in Kentucky; "He has been there long enough!" And Grimes has failed to accentuate this transcendent Anti-McConnell sentiment in Kentucky.
She has one shot and one shot only. She must dump everything and every single dime into one unmistakable and aggressive message. TERM LIMITS. Yes, she must stand on the stump and say something that will make all career politicians cringe. This is it, the fourth quarter, the two minute warning and she has no timeouts left. Dump it all into one message, TERM LIMITS. Tell the people of Kentucky that you will make sure THIS will never happens again. This being; a 30 year U.S. Senator. We know there is zero chance of Term Limits becoming the law of the land but the people will respond, this I can guarantee.
I don't think Grimes is in danger of going dark on the airways, as some have recently suggested. I think she can pull this off on her own, without DSCC money. I still think there is a chance for Grimes but she must bring the heat and she must bring it now. Pull all of your existing ads, pull them now, sit your ass down in a chair and talk to the people of this Commonwealth and tell them you will fight for Term Limits.
I thought I witnessed the worst of the worst in 2010 when KDP insiders and other powerful players within the Democratic party cut Daniel Mongiardo's throat in the Democratic Primary for U.S. Senate. They did this knowing that Jack Conway would get smoked by Rand Paul in the general election. They gave it away out of arrogance and in my mind out of prejudice toward a hillbilly politician from Hazard, Kentucky but I was wrong. This is the worst of the worst, something I thought I would never see again. However, hell has indeed frozen over.
