Already folks are jaw-jacking about next year's elections. Of course Daniel Mongiardo is facing Jack Conway, that race will be hot in these hills. Mongiardo might actually have some huge coattails next year. It will be interesting to see who will try and catch a ride.
With the recent FBI busts in the area many local politicos are saying "who’s next?".
Most of these races will be decided in the primary.
House District 93 - With Keith Hall on the hot seat; will he face a strong challenger? I hear it will get worse before it gets better for Hall.
House District 95– Needles to say, Greg Stumbo is safe.
House District 94 – I am hearing that a couple of Harlan County candidates might actually challenge Rep. Leslie Combs. She seems to be very strong in her district, but her vote for slots will hurt her in that conservative district. Of course one must remember; people like you on one side of the hollow and hate you on the other.
House District 84 – It appears that all of Fitz Steele’s primary competition may be under indictment. Well a few of them. Chester Jones would have definitely been a candidate. He voted against slots and that saves his tail, in my opinion.
House District 87 – Rep. Rick Nelson should have no problem winning the Democratic primary. Bell County is on the fringes of GOP territory so a strong GOP candidate might cause Nelson some heartburn. But Nelson is strong so he should have no problems as of today.
House District 90 – This could be a bad year for Rep. Tim Couch if the current investigation into massive regional voter fraud yields any evidence that Couch is dirty. Paul E. Bishop, a former Republican precinct judge says that he pooled money for a slate that included Couch. You know; vote buying.
House District 92– Ancel Smith should be safe, but I know very little about Knott County politics.
State Senate District 30– This could get interesting. Straight up; when Mongiardo wins the Democratic primary for U.S. Senate he should have coattails 50 miles long in this state senate district. That could spell lights out for Brandon Smith. I have heard two prominent names and both want to keep it quiet, so we will have to wait and see.
