Senator David Williams (R) Insults Senate District 30
Senate President David Williams (R) has never had nothing but contempt for Senate District 30. His complete disregard for our Mountain People is punctuated by the fact that his dark wit offends even the thickest skinned Harlan and or Bell Countian. To serve this master is to serve an empty suit so I hope the Democrats of Senate District 30 unify their voices and send Rep. Brandon Smith (R) home. While many of the good people in Harlan County have the Christian habit of forgiving and forgetting, we should not forget that Senator David Williams (R) was the chief architect in splitting Harlan into 4 House Districts, ending a unified Harlan in the State House.

This is one of the most misleading ads ever. The pronunciation may be a bit iffy but what Williams really said was "out in the state" and he was complaining that Beshear's first trip out of Frankfort was to stump for Alexander.
Williams represents a mountain district. Cumberland, Clinton, Whitley and McCreary are all Appalachian counties.
The Democrats should be ashamed for putting this ad up and you should be ashamed for parroting it.

I think Harlan Co should let David Williams know what we are made of..We dont have to his ridicule and far as Brandon..pack your bags ole stiff necked Brandon..and kiss it good bye..
Posted by: .. | January 31, 2008 at 09:29 AM
it is a insult to bell and harlan counties to think we could be influnced by an add like this. It appears that KDP thinks we are all dumb...
Posted by: | January 31, 2008 at 10:31 AM
This ad is an extension of Williams and his contempt for our region. So fast do we all forget that Williams laughed in Mongiardo's face when he presented our famous yeller water to Williams and the jerk laughed and said what is that your urine, hu hu hu. I think the ad is great!

Everyone knows that Scott Alexander is a total dumba**. He could not pass a single bill or even sponsor one in the house. Do we want to take a chance that he might be in a position where he will need to think for himself someday?

LA Ky you have no clue what you are talking about do you? Of course not.

Alexander sure is doing a good job hiding his legislative past online. Finally found these facts about Scott Alexander's legislative past ...
Wednesday, October 25, 2006
Voters’ Choice in House 84: An Expensive Suit or an Empty One
Former State Rep. Scott Alexander was once ranked the State House’s least effective member. But that isn’t stopping him from throwing everything including the kitchen sink at incumbent Rep. Brandon Smith in his bid to unseat Smith.
In what has to be one of the most unusual low blows (albeit not the lowest) in the campaign season, Alexander is accusing his opponent of… I hope you’re sitting down for this… it's a real shocker... “wearing $2,000.00 suits”, "gold cuff links" and going to receptions. Huh?
His ad also accused Smith of being too close to Governor Fletcher. Even the Herald Leader shot this one down: In reality, however, few GOP lawmakers have been more outspoken critics of Fletcher than Smith, who vocally opposed the governor's move to change how coal severance tax funds are distributed in counties.
During his four year tenure in the State House Scott Alexander passed a single bill. Shockingly, he wasn’t even able to garner the UMWA’s endorsement despite his experience in the coal industry. Meanwhile, here’s what the Herald Leader had to say about Smith:
"Smith has played a leading role in several key pieces of legislation. He sponsored a bill in 2003 that gives disabled children a choice in their care. And he co-wrote legislation this year that created a supplemental fund to help small businesses cover their employees' health insurance. He has written 29 bills during his six years in office, and six of the bills have passed, making him one of the more productive members of the minority Republican caucus."
So the choice voters in Harlan and Perry County’s 84th House District face is simple: do they want an expensive suit in Frankfort or an empty one?

Alexander has never been a man of the establishment. So his so called ranking means nothing. If Alexander had not have been betrayed by members of his own party he would have destroyed Smith in 06. People like $95,000 per year woman for GOLD, Kellie Wilson who walked the streets for Brandon Smith in 06 has seen the error of their ways and Smith will not walk away with a 15 point victory in Harlan county. I expect it to be flipped.
Alexander is the only choice for us.

Is this the same Kellie Wilson who once worked for a Lexington television station spending her time attacking non-Christians?

it continues to amaze me that people think it is more important to have a DEMOCRAT in office than AN EFFECTIVE LEADER. As if it does not matter how much sense the candidate has, how many bills he has passed, how many wonderful opportunities he has brought to our area and our whole state- it only matters that you vote for a democrat......?
it amazes me that people do not understand why Scott Alexander's past record is so hard to find. I would hide it too if I was that ineffective at my job as a State Representative.
it amazes me that people do not question why there has been no debate. I would not debate either if I was Scott Alexander and my oppenent was Brandon Smith.
I urge the people of Bell, Harlan, Leslie and Perry Counties to think not about party affiliation, BUT to focus on who is the more QUALIFIED candidate.
hands down, Brandon Smith is that candidate.
Posted by: j wall | January 31, 2008 at 06:30 PM
Brandon Smith will vote however David Williams tells him to.
Did you know David Williams box number on his address is 666 !!!!
Posted by: | January 31, 2008 at 06:37 PM
Ummm...fyi...Sen Pres Williams had nothing to do with the redistricting in the House. The House took care of House districts and the Senate took care of Senate districts. If you want something to write about then blame Speaker Jody...while you still can.
Posted by: Ted Jones | January 31, 2008 at 07:59 PM
OMG...Scott Alexander will humiliate us. The man can't speak the King's English. Having positive representation of the 30th is better than having Democrat representation.
Posted by: Brad | January 31, 2008 at 08:04 PM
People can only attack him because of the way he talks and looks. No one has said anything of substance and it is shameful that we have such shallow people breathing my air in this district. Alexander will be a great statesman.
Posted by: | January 31, 2008 at 08:16 PM
people are commenting on more than Alexander's looks. For example, from KyPolitics.org dated January 25, 2008:
" -Alexander voted for Patton's black-lung bill which made it more difficult for miners in his area to get workers' comp.
-Alexander is a total yes man for the Governor. Governor needs him for a yes vote on gambling.
-Once, when he was rep, he allowed $15,000 in Perry Co. coal-severance funds to be spent in a Knott Co project -- Knott's not even in his district.
-He was voted one of the least effective legislators when he was in Frankfort. He's been beaten twice by Brandon Smith. "
and just as a side note, Brandon Smith was chosen to represent the National Legislative EFFECTIVENESS committee (oh and he was chosen by a democrat!)

Don't quote that hack Brett Hall on this blog. It will get you nothing.
Posted by: | January 31, 2008 at 08:49 PM
You have it wrong when it comes to how Harlan County came to be split into having 4 state representatives. It was the Kentucky House of Representatives, led by Democrats who divided us up after the 2000 census. At that time Johnnie Turner, a Republican was our state representative. It was designed to split his district up. David Williams and the Republican controlled Senate redistricted the Senate seat. This resulted in Mongiardo representing people near Georgetown and Lexington. Mongiardo defeated Turner and resigned the relocated senate seat.
Posted by: | January 31, 2008 at 10:25 PM
To the idiot that quotes Brett Hall about voting for Black Lung ... Alexander wan't even in the legislature at that time.
To all idiots dripping honey on how "effective" Brandon Smith is: Brandon Smith's legislative career has spanned 8 years! He's sponsored and passed ONE bill.
Oh sure, he co-sponsors just about everything so he can say he "co-wrote" and "helped sponsor" - To co-sponosr all you have to do is ask the sponosr if she/he minds and file the proper papers wioth the clerk. Co-sponsors of bill have NOTHING to do with the actual drafting of the bill... but it sure make for nice ads at election time.
Brandon Smith had the tenth WORST attendance record in the General Assembly in 2007.
Brandon Smith let a college intern cast his votes on the House floor when he WAS NOT THERE. The C-J called Smith's actions "offensive and unbecoming." I doubt Scott Alexander would ever allow an intern to cast votes that affect our Commonwealth when he is not present
Brandon Smith is known WIDELY in Frankfort circles as being a schoomzer, known more for his social skills than his legislative skills.
IT is also true that Brandon Smith voted along straight party lines in 2004 and voted AGAINST the House version of the Budget Bill that contained about 25 specific projects in Perry and Harlan counties totaling nearly $3 million dollars to be paid for from coal severance money.
BRANDON VOTED NO then immediately went with his fellow Republicans down to the rotunda and held a love fest with ERNIE FLETCHER whos praised Brandon Smith and his Republican colleagues saying how united they all were and they were a team, etc, etc. (see Courirer Journal dated March 2004.
So please stop all the blathering for how effective and righteous Brandon Smith is.
He's a smoth talking suit who does what he's told and that is the crux of this election.
Brandon Smith will do and vote exactly how David Williams tells him to vote on the key issues affecting our Commonwealth. Williams rules the State Senate with an iron fist. He will do as instructed or he will be treated like Mongiardo was treated and many other Democratic state senators who dared to speak truth to power.
Give me Scott Alexander any day - he started his own business and made it successful. He's made his own way in this life and that's more than I can say for brandon Smith. I don't care if he's got a mountain drawl or what he looks like. Scott Alexander will work with Mongiardo and Beshear NOT AGAINST THEM as instructed by David Williams.

Is this the same Kellie Wilson who once worked for a Lexington television station spending her time attacking non-Christians?
No, it isn't. Name spelled the same way; totally different person. Not that that would prevent sleaseballs on blogs from sliming someone, though.
Posted by: Bulletbob | February 01, 2008 at 01:44 PM
Who you calling a Sleazeball?
Posted by: | February 01, 2008 at 02:08 PM
Scott Alexander is a Beshear-toady. Steve Beshear found the dumbest dude in the mountains for the sole purpose of voting for Beshear's casinos. Beshear new that Noe & Bill Hayes weren't toadies that's why Beshear picked the slow-thinking Alexander.
Alexander was a pitiful representative and if elected he will be every bit as pitiful as he was last time.
The reason Alexander has no campaign website is because he can't even think of one good reason to vote for him.
The reason Alexander does not provide the voters with his ideals and what he stands for is because Alexander does not stand for anything ... he has no ideals ... he's a fool.
The reason Steve Beshear gave away MILLIONS of taxpayer dollars to Harlan Co. & Middlesboro this week is because the only way to get the fool Alexander elected is to buy votes.
Steve Beshear gave away our taxmoney to buy an election.

4:47 p.m. Boy your right. Brandon Smith's web site is full of all his great ideas and it's smart and funny too. Oh wait, he doesn't have web site either.
This has been a campaign short on substance on both sides.
Let's see, vote for Brandon Smith because Steve Beshear was mean to Roger Noe or vote for Scott Alexander because David Williams is geographically challenged... Hmmm???
I guess if I have to choose… I’ll vote for Scott Alexander because Roger Noe whines like little girl.

Alexander spelled "desp[e]rately" WRONG in his ad.
I'm just depressed that Alexander's ad misspells "desp[e]rately." Is it too much to hope for that a state senate candidate's limited text be literate?
Posted by: | February 02, 2008 at 08:54 AM
Scott Alexander does have a lot to hide ... mainly his past legislative record which is nothing to post on the internet.
Scott Alexander:
During his four year tenure in the State House Scott Alexander:
* passed a single bill.
* Couldn't garner the UMWA’s endorsement despite his experience in the coal industry.
* Alexander voted for Patton's black-lung bill which made it more difficult for miners in his area to get workers' comp.
*Alexander is a total yes man for the Governor. Governor needs him for a yes vote on gambling.
*Once, when he became representative, Alexander allowed $15,000 in Perry Co. coal-severance funds to be spent in a Knott Co project -- Knott's not even in his district.
* Alexander was voted one of the least effective legislators when he was in Frankfort.
* Alexander has been beaten twice by Brandon Smith.
* Many in Harlan Co. believe Beshear picked Alexander because Alexander will vote any way Beshear tells him to.
Brandon Smith:
Smith has played a leading role in several key pieces of legislation. (from the Herald Leader 2006)
*He sponsored a bill in 2003 that gives disabled children a choice in their care.
* Smith co-wrote legislation this year that created a supplemental fund to help small businesses cover their employees' health insurance.
* Smith has written 29 bills during his six years in office, and six of the bills have passed, making him one of the more productive members of the minority Republican caucus
* A Democrat chose Smith to represent the National Legislative EFFECTIVENESS Committee.

Exactly right Kingfish. Smith may think we are stupid, but we know an "uncle Tom" when we see it.
Vote for Alexander, and the area.
Vote for Smith, and vote for Williiam's gang that have and will never do squat for this area. Of course, Smith does not care because he is in politics to help himself, not the people.
Posted by: liberty | February 04, 2008 at 01:22 AM
You all got a lot of nerve to throw mud at Alexander. He works and supports his family. What does smith do? I hear nothing except spend his wife's family's money.
Is this incorrect?
I know I want to elect someone that knows what working people are going through.
I hear he loves gas prices being high because his wife's family makes more money that way. If you don't understand what gas prices have done to the family, then you surely don't need to be in Frankfort.
I stop by their gas stations every day and barely have the money to buy gas to get back and forth from home to work. All I see him do is smile. I wish I had such a cushy life. Should have married a rich girl and changed my name, like Smith did.
